Maha Kumbh 2025: World’s Largest Gathering Begins, 6 Million Devotees Take Holy Dip on Paush Purnima

This year’s Maha Kumbh, which will span 45 days, is expected to be the largest human gathering in history, with over 40 crore devotees anticipated to attend.

The Maha Kumbh 2025 officially began on Monday, with 6 million devotees already having taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj by 9:30 AM, according to the Uttar Pradesh government.

Devotees from all over the world have gathered to bathe in the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati rivers. The first major bathing event, known as the Shahi Snan or Amrit Snan, will take place on Tuesday during Makar Sankranti.

This year’s Maha Kumbh, which will span 45 days, is expected to be the largest human gathering in history, with over 40 crore devotees anticipated to attend.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his excitement about the commencement of Maha Kumbh 2025, calling it a “very special day” for the millions who uphold Indian values and culture. On X, PM Modi said, “A very special day for crores of people who cherish Bharatiya values and culture. Maha Kumbh 2025 commences in Prayagraj, bringing together countless people in a sacred confluence of faith, devotion, and culture. The Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith and harmony.”

PM Modi also expressed his happiness at the sight of an influx of pilgrims and tourists in Prayagraj. He wished all visitors a memorable and fulfilling experience, saying, “I am happy to see Prayagraj abuzz with countless people coming here, taking the holy dip, and seeking blessings.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also praised the event, calling the Maha Kumbh 2025 a proud symbol of India’s spiritual and cultural heritage. CM Yogi emphasized the significance of “unity in diversity” and expressed his hope that the spiritual wishes of those coming to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganga would be fulfilled.

To ensure the safety and security of the devotees, security personnel are on high alert, patrolling by boats and horses. NDRF teams and water police of the Uttar Pradesh Police have been deployed across various locations.

Traffic Police have made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth transportation and the safety of visitors, including a well-structured plan for vehicular movement. The entry to the Sangam Mela area will be through Jawaharlal Nehru Marg (Black Road), while the exit will be via Triveni Marg. During the major bathing festivals, the Akshayavat Darshan will remain closed to visitors.

Special parking arrangements have been set up for vehicles arriving from Jaunpur, including Chini Mill Parking, Purva Surdas Parking, Garapur Road, Samyamai Temple Kachar Parking, and Badra Saunoti Rahimapur Marg.

The Maha Kumbh is being celebrated after 12 years, with an expected turnout of over 450 million devotees. The event will conclude on February 26.
